Text: Luke 15
In this passage of Scripture, Jesus tells three parables: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son.
Though Jesus was speaking to many people that day, He directed His message to the Pharisees and the scribes, because they were grumbling about Him receiving lost sinners and eating with them.
As you read these three parables, notice what brought on the celebration in each case. Here are four key verses from the parables:
"Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance." -Jesus, Luke 15:7
"Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
-Jesus, Luke 15:10
"And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son'...It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found." -Jesus, Luke 15:21, 32
In telling these parables, Jesus was trying to help the Pharisees and the scribes understand why He "receives sinners and eats with them" (vs. 2). He described lost things -- a sheep, a coin, and a son. In each case, Jesus emphasized sin and the need for repentance (vss. 7, 10, 21, 32). In essence, Jesus was telling the "grumblers" that He was on a mission when He spent time with sinners, and that mission was to bring them to repentance. This is what it means for the "lost" to be "found".
And, when a lost person is found -- when a sinner repents -- there is great rejoicing and celebration! Jesus said there would be joy in heaven (vs. 7), joy before the angels (vs. 10), and joy in our homes (vss. 23, 24, 25, 32)!
What good news! Such good news, in fact, that we should be eager to share THE Good News (the Gospel) with the lost sinners all around us! Here's the GOOD NEWS, as described by the apostle Paul in I Corinthians 15:3-8:
1. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures;
2. He was buried;
3. He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures;
4. He appeared to many, more than 500 brothers at a time.
